Learning To Learn Online

I just experienced the "Learn How to Learn Online" class given by Jennifer Falkowski and Trina Panagos of SMRLA.

Great experience. The Horizon Wimba software is fairly easy to naviagte, but it does a good job of replicating the classroom/training environment. You can raise your hand, speak, write on the whiteboard, and even make snarky comments to another participant behind the teacher's back.

I'm eager to take more classes using this environment. I think anybody who's having fun with the Web 2.0 assignment would like this training.

I did that LHTLO thing about a month ago... I found that there were a few people in the group who really had a very hard time figuring out the software, but that maybe 75% got it easily or with a little practice. Did you get the same sort of division? Do you think the software will be useful if we're leaving 25% behind?

I took a couple of online classes while working on my MLS, so I love the possibility of making snarky comments behind the teacher's back. That was sorely missing from my online experience.

a.l.: There were about a dozen people in our group, and everyone seemed to get the software pretty easily. But I could certainly see that someone might have trouble with it.

No matter what the teaching style is, there are some people for whom that style doesn't work: visual, auditory, classroom, independent review, online, etc. Maybe the online environment could be a viable option for those who have trouble learning in a classroom or independently?

Whatever the case, I think it should be one option among many, not the sole available option.

shshhingexercises: In order to make snarky comments, you need to have a confederate. Of course, that's true in real life, as well. And at least online, you don't take the chance of getting caught disrupting the class, or having the instructor say "Would you like to share your comment with the whole class?"

They did mention, though, that if you're bad they might send you to the lobby to think about what you did....

But what about doodling? You doodle and it's there for all the class to see. I must admit that without the ability to doodle I get a little bored in class, on or offline.

Snarky comments but no doodling. I guess you can't have everything. I'm signed up for the training in January.
